Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Drug trafficking remains a pressing challenge in Ilorin East Local Government, Kwara State, undermining public health and safety while fueling organized crime. Print media has a vital role in combating this menace by creating awareness, educating the public, and advocating for stronger policies. Through investigative journalism and advocacy campaigns, newspapers and magazines can expose the networks and consequences of drug trafficking. Research from recent years highlights the potential of media to influence public attitudes and policy responses toward crime and substance abuse (Adewale & Olatunji, 2023). This study assesses public perceptions of print media’s role in addressing drug trafficking in Ilorin East Local Government.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite media efforts to combat drug trafficking, public trust in their effectiveness is often undermined by perceptions of insufficient coverage, sensationalism, and limited follow-through on investigative reporting. This study explores how the public perceives the role of print media in combating drug trafficking and identifies gaps in current media practices.
